  • Entertainment Weekly, Lisa Schwarzbaum: “I felt a swell of love and awe wash over me from the very first wickedly creepy scene until the profoundly moving last one.”
  • The New York Times, A.O. Scott: “The movie, in other words, belongs solidly to Mr. Radcliffe, Mr. Grint and Ms. Watson, who have grown into nimble actors, capable of nuances of feeling that would do their elders proud.”
  • USA Today, Scott Bowles: “Menacing and meditative, Hallows is arguably the best installment of the planned eight-film franchise.”
  • Slate, Dana Stevens: “Ultimately, this movie’s not for Muggles like me-it’s for the millions and millions of Harry Potter fans who, quibbles aside, will welcome its arrival as a blessed event.”
  • New York Daily News, Elizabeth Weitzman: “Equal parts action thriller, political parable, and multidimensional love story, “Hallows” feels sad and strong and true.”
  • ReelViews, James Berardinelli: “At a time when Harry Potter should be soaring to new heights, it remains curiously grounded.”
  • Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert: “The film depends more on mood and character than many of the others, and key actions seem to be alarmingly taking place off-screen.”
  • Variety, Justin Chang: “Director David Yates spins the series’ most expansive, structurally free-form chapter yet — lumbering and gripping by turns, and suffused with a profound sense of solitude and loss.”
  • Time, Richard Corliss: “Now the end is near, and the series’ myriad fans, thronging to the opening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, face their gravest challenge yet: sitting.”
  • New York Magazine, David Edelstein: “Hallows’s first hour is deadly, all right.”
